Elora's Success Story
Elora has been so successful at achieving her goal, she has recently become a spokeswoman for Simple Tasty Nutrition – Read more about her ongoing journey below, or even better – meet her in person at the Simple Tasty Nutrition Seminars starting in Christchurch January 2014!
I started my journey to health back in January of 2013. I sit here today, 2 years later, 55kg lighter – well over half way to my goal of losing 60kg. I was a 19 year old girl, who was morbidly obese, tired and in the fast lane to developing diabetes. Evidently it was the fear of developing diabetes, resulting in lots of medical problems that pushed me to lose weight. I had always wanted to lose weight, tried and then failed many times.
I have done every diet from SureSlim to Atkins and none of them worked, probably because I was between the ages of 13-16. When I was 16, I started going to parties and not caring about what went in my mouth and the weight just piled on. At the start of 2012 I briefly started trying to lose weight, and after losing about 6kgs, life just got in the way. I moved away from home to study and as a student, I ate takeaways every single day without fail. It was upon my arrival back to Christchurch that I noticed my headaches and lack of energy were getting worse. Naturally I researched them and came to the conclusion I was showing signs that were leaning towards diabetes. I sat down and knew it was time to do something.
I told my boss, a friend of Sara from Simple Tasty Nutrition and her husband, at work I was serious about losing weight, and he was so supportive that he paid for 3 months worth of CrossFit and 3 sessions with Sara. After starting with clean eating, a great foundation builder, I got sucked in to the Michelle Bridges 12wbt challenge by the awesome results I’d seen people have with it. I had one session with Sara and I was totally sold on her lifestyle. However, I was still paying for the 12wbt, and the 1200 calorie mentality was getting to me – I soon gave it up in favour of Sara’s meal plans and haven’t looked back since. I had two weeks of meal plans from Sara and her support for a further two sessions. Since I knew Sara’s plans were based on the Paleo/Primal lifestyle, I soon completely altered my life and became an avid follower of the Paleo movement.
The key to my success is both perseverance – times get tough, but with perseverance you will always prevail, and organisation; my favourite saying being “Fail to prepare? Prepare to fail!” I work 12 hour shifts, and take two hours on one of my days off to prepare my breakfasts, lunches and snacks for that working week. If my food is all there for me to grab n go, I have no excuses. Organise yourself and your time, and becoming healthy becomes as easy as breathing. I have broken old habits, and formed permanent changes by just becoming organised. It’s routine, like clockwork.
The most important thing I could tell anyone is that this is a lifestyle and not a diet. Diet mentality will set you up for fail every single time. If you go from the glorious whole food under the Paleo guide, to the processed crap you used to eat you’re just going to reverse all of the changes you have made to yourself. I will eat this way not only until I reach my goal weight, but also the rest of my life. Whilst it seems strict, I have never felt more freedom with food in my life. Explore and enjoy the food that fuels your body. Since this is a lifestyle you don’t need to plan ‘cheat’ meals because you aren’t cheating, you’re just living your life and you happen to be having something you wouldn’t normally go for that meal!
Enjoy your journey, it is incredibly personal and will be one of the most rewarding things you have done in your life.
